My Trojans are favored by 13.5 right now over the unmighty Fighting Illini.
In most circumstances I consider SC as a lock to bet on against inferior opposition like Illinois.
However, this game presents one big red flag for me.
1. The Illini have an athletic QB who loves to run. Since I can remember, SC has never faired well against a running QB. From Jake Locker to Vince Young to Dennis Dixon, we just don't play well. In the past two years, SC has not covered against UW (last year they had Isiah Stanback, another runner at QB). Agasint Texas, well you witnessed it. Dennis Dixon ate us alive.
I'm not sure why SC has never played well against these QB's. Maybe because until recently, the Pac-10 traditionally has in-the-pocket QB's running their offenses. Maybe not.
However, I think based on the fact that SC is still on a mission to prove that they are indeed the best team in the country, this game will be a blowout.
I'm not sure what Carroll is doing to combat the running attack of the Illini but based on his bowl record (with the exception of Texas), he has done a great job of preparing the Trojans for big games.
I'm looking for SC to win by about 21 in this game.
